The College of Agricultural and Food Sciences Hosts a Group of Activities on the Second Day of the "Second International Conference on Food Security and Environmental Sustainability"
The College of Agricultural and Food Sciences hosted a scientific posters exhibition as part of the activities of the second day of the Second International Conference on Food Security and Environmental Sustainability, on Monday, November 6, 2023, in the lobby of the College Deanship.
The exhibition included 30 scientific posters, presented by students and researchers at an international level, displaying scientific research, products and innovations that contribute to preserving and sustaining the environment.
The college also hosted the scientific sessions of the second day of the conference, where participants addressed the topic of “Managing Waste and Conversion to Added Value” at the first session, where Dr. Mahmoud Ahmed Hamid (academic and advisor to the international Green Bond project in Sweden) discussed “Farm Waste in Saudi Arabia: Challenges and Solutions, while Dr. Muhammad Jamal Hajjar (Professor of Pesticides and Toxins, College of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Supervisor on the Environmental Protection Unit at King Faisal University) discussed “Plastic Waste Management Systems: Treatment and Maximizing their Outputs. Dr. Andre Volpato (An international expert in hazardous waste management, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and Dr. Mamdouh Fallata (A chemical safety expert at the National Center for Control of Environmental Compliance, Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture) also reviewed the topic of “Hazardous Waste Management and its Mitigation”. After that, attendees had the opportunity to open discussion.
After the break, the second session took place under the title: Strengthening Sustainability Systems in Food Security, during which Dr. Ahmed Mukhtar (senior economist and head of strategy and policies at the Regional Office of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) spoke about “Geographical Indications for Agricultural Products”, While Dr. Muhammad Al-Fawzan (Deputy Governor of the Saudi Authority for Food Security) spoke highlighted the issue of “Sustainable Food Systems to Reduce Food Loss and Waste”. After that, Mr. Faisal bin Fahd bin Sunaid (Director of the Health Food Department, Food and Drug Authority) addressed “Enhancing the Sustainability and Resilience of Food Systems (Legislation and Governance)”. An open discussion followed with the audience.
At the conclusion of the sessions and workshops, the conference’s recommendations were announced and the winners of the scientific posters were honored by His Excellency Dr. Majid bin Adi Al-Shammari, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research:
The first place winner was the researchers: Elaf Mishaan Al-Shuwaiti and Amina Saud Al-Otaibi from the University of Tabuk, and the winning research entitled: "Environmental DNA Metabarcoding For The Biodiversity Assessment Of Coral Reefs in The Red Sea (Near of AMALA)"
Researcher Mai Mustafa Khalaf, from the College of Science, King Faisal University, won second place Award, and her research entitled: "Biodegradable Wastes as Novel Electrocatalysts Based on Phosphate Functionalization of Manganese/Nickel Bbimetals for Ethylene Glycol (EG) Oxidation and their Application as a Sustainable Electrochemical Fuel Cell"
While researcher Ashjan Fawzi Khalil, from Jazan University, won the third place award, and her research entitled: "Bioconversion of Feather to Fertilizer by Using Streptomycin Bulli AK20"
