Self Concept and its Relation with Locus of Control According to a Sample of Ajloun College Female Students

Abstract

The self and locus of control concepts is a subject of great attention in psychiatric studies. This study aimed to identify the relation between the concepts of [internal, external] locus of control and self concept. In addition, it aimed to assess the differences of locus of control and self concept in female students due to their study major. A sample of 100 female students (50 from applied sciences major and 50 from educational and social sciences major) representing a society of 760 female students from Ajloun College. The researcher used descriptive approach using the locus of control and self concept scale after testing for stability and validity. The results of the study revealed that the differences of the level of control (internal – external) between the two majors were not statistically different. However, the relation between self concept and internal locus of control among the students from both majors was statistically significant. Furthermore, no relation was detected between self concept and external locus of control for the examined majors. Statistically significant differences were detected for self concept were detected among majors in favor of applied science students and for internal locus of control in favor of educational and social major. Meanwhile, no differences were detected for external locus of control. This study recommends that the educational environment must be improved to elevate the level of internal locus of control in addition to enabling the advising process to enhance the concept of positive self concept and introducing psychological courses dealing with self concept development.
