The ethylene sensor is formed from a substrate with a thin layer of gold formed on it, which is made of fizzy drink-lime glass with a thickness of about 1.0 mm. Accordingly, the gold layer can have a thickness of about 200 nmapproximately200nm. The gold layer is divided by a variable impedance channel into a first and a second region of electrodes, the K0.003Au0.008Mg0.009Ca0.015Si0.11Na0.175O0.68asanethyl selective material. The channel can be designed so that the first and second sets of interdigitated gold fingers are defined in the first and second regions of the electrodes. An ohmmeter is connected to the first and second regions to measure the resistance; first a reference resistance is measured to indicate the absence of ethylene. Subsequent measurements of ethylene density are compared with this reference resistance, with fluctuations in the measured resistance indicating the presence of ethylene.
