Effectiveness of Cognitive Schema Modification in Reducing Vitiligo Burden

(Latifah Othman Ashaalan)

Abstract

The term “burden” has become a topic of interest since Hay et al. published their 2014 study on the burden associated with (15) skin diseases including their effects on the quality of life, emotional state, social integration, as well as the effective usage of medical care services. The aim of this research is to explore the effectiveness of cognitive schema modification in reducing vitiligo burden among Saudi women. The sample consisted of (44) women with vitiligo, divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group, each with (22) women. Salzes et al. Vitiligo Burden Scale (2016) was administered (as a pre-test) to both groups. This was followed by applying the modification based on the work of Judith Beck on 1995 via a chat room to the experimental group for (8) weeks. Afterwards, the Vitiligo Burden Scale was administered to both groups (as a post-test). The study revealed significant differences in the average scores between the two groups in the post-test in all dimensions and total score of the vitiligo burden scale in favor of the experimental group. There was significant differences in the average scores of the experimental group between the pre- and post-test in all dimensions and total score of the scale in favor of the post-test. In the light of the study's findings, it is recommended to execute comparative studies of different psychological treatment methods for vitiligo patients of both sexes, as well as for other skin disorders such as alopecia and psoriasis.
