Utilization Degree of Elementary Science Teacher's Guide Book and Bag for Class Activities and Evaluation

Abstract

The project of "Developing Mathematics and Natural Sciences in general Education", performed by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Education, is one of the pioneering projects in its field. "Teacher's Guide" and "Teacher's Bag for Class Activities and Evaluation" are valuable products of this project that should help science teachers in planning and executing lessons especially in the elementary level. This study aimed to determine the degree of teacher's guide and bag utilization in the elementary stage and its obstacles using the questionnaire prepared for this purpose. The questionnaire was applied on a sample of one hundred teachers in Riyadh city. The results indicated that the degree of using the teacher's guide was at an "intermediate degree", while the teacher's bag was at a "weak degree". There was not statistically significant difference between teachers' usage of the guide and the bag due to experience or training courses variables. However, there were statistically significant differences due to the acquirement of a private copy of the teacher's guide or bag. In addition, the results showed that teachers face high and intermediate degree obstacles that limit their usage of the bag and the guide. The main obstacles were; "unavailability of teaching aids and infrastructure to execute the suggested activities", "the guide is too ideal and does not comply with real life class situation including students number or class limited duration", "the scheduled curriculum timetable is not enough to apply the teacher guide the instructions", and "the number of teacher's bag at the school is insufficient". This research offered many recommendations including mainly providing enough copies of teacher's guides and class activities bags.
