Multiple Intelligences among a Sample of Students at King Faisal University Based on Specialization and Gender Variables

Abstract

The theory of multiple intelligences attained attention in educational field. Its application grow to cover all the areas of education. This study aimed to investigate the differences in multiple intelligences among scientific and theoretic Specialization of King Faisal University students based on the variables of gender and academic specialization, and their interaction. Furthermore, it aimed to detect the order intelligences types within each group. A sub-goal was to calculate coefficients of validity and reliability of MIDAS scale of multiple intelligences. The descriptive analytical approach was used. The research community consisted of students in some literary colleges (Arts - Education) and scientific colleges (Medicine - Science) at King Faisal University. The sample consisted of (200) students (96 male, and 114 female students). MIDAS Scale prepared by Branton Shearer was used was adapted to fit the Saudi environment after testing for stability and validity. The results showed the presence of differences between the mean scores of males and females in mathematical, spatial, Kinesthetic, social and total in favor of male students. In addition, there were differences between scientific and literary specialization in spatial, Kinesthetic, social, natural, linguistic, mathematical, and total in favor of scientific specialty except for linguistic Intelligence. Furthermore, statistically significant effect interaction between gender and specialization in math, and spatial and Kinesthetic, and the total intelligences score, in favor of male scientific in all comparisons, The researcher recommended the development of training programs for faculty members to be able to develop students' intelligences through teaching.
