Restricted Saying of God Is the Greatest "Takbeer" in Moslem Feasts Its Arbiter, Time, and Conditions

(Ahmad H. M. Mousa)

Abstract

This work discusses and compares Moslem scholars' opinions and evidences about restricted saying of "God is the greatest" (Takbeer- RT). In the first section, the Jurisprudential ruling of RT in feasts, i.e., End-of-Ramadan feast (Eid al Fitr), and Sacrificing Feast (Eid al Adha) was discussed. The opinions of scholars about RT starting and ending time were presented. In the second section, RT conditions were presented. These conditions includes performing RT after obligatory, on-time prayers, in group-prayers only, by male residents only, in towns where feast prayers are conducted. The work also discussed conditions in cases where someone misses part of a group prayer, in addition to short time elapse after prayer termination. The main findings indicated that RT is not legitimate in End-of–Ramadan Feast. However, for Sacrificing Feast, RT should start after the dawn of the day before the feast "Arafa-Stand day" and conclude after the afternoon "Asr" prayer of the fourth day after Arafa-Stand day (4th Tashreeq day). Maleness is not a condition to perform RT. However, it should be conducted after obligatory prayers rather than voluntarily prayers (Sonnah) whether they were prayed on time or delayed. The exact time to perform RT is immediately after prayer ends and before regular post-prayer supplications (Zekr). Key Words: Arafa-Stand day, End-of-Ramadan feast (Eid al Fitr), Prayer, Sacrificing Feast (Eid al Adha), Tashreeq days.
