Students Perspective of Violence in the Jordanian University

Abstract

University violence is a major danger to societys security and structure. The study aimed to investigate the causes and types of violence in universities, in addition to detect the limiting factors from the perspective of the students. The sample consisted of (100) Jordanian University students (50 males and 50 females). To achieve the objectives of the study a questionnaire consisting of two parts was used. The first part of the questionnaire covered demographic characteristics of the participants while the second part covered student’s violence in three sections. The first contained (8) items, the second contained (6) items, and the third has (8) items. Validity and reliability for the instrument were conducted. The findings showed that the main driving causes of university students violence were direct assault by others, provocation, and intolerance due to origin or specialization. The dominant violence types were oral or spiritual violence, and physical assault. The study also indicated that limiting university violence could be achieved through deliberation in handling conflicts and people, being reasonable, using peaceful approaches, imposing strict punishments on violent students. In light of the findings, the work recommended the necessity for having very strict punishment bylaws for violence conducting in universities and activating such rules to be equally applied to all students.
