Cultural Aspects Drawn from the Prophet's (PBUH) Sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage

Abstract

The Prophet's (PBUH) sermon, which was delivered during his farewell pilgrimage on the day of Arafah, summarized the religion and legislation fundamentals for the foundation of Islamic society, on basis of adopting Allah's monotheism, rejecting polytheism, and believing in the final message. The sermon included teachings that pertain to people's worldly affairs and whatever comes on their way at present and future. It also included human principles and aspects of civilization that humanity had not experienced before. Moreover, the sermon is characterized by brevity as the Prophet (PBUH) was endowed with the pithiness of speech. The study follows an analytical deductive approach in examining the most prominent cultural aspects of the Prophet’s (PBUH) sermon during the farewell pilgrimage. These aspects include establishing human dignity, preserving the five necessities, preserving human rights, bringing down Pre-Islamic Paganism including its systems and rituals, emphasizing the Islamic nation unity, fulfilling the trust, holding fast to the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), completing and perfecting the religion, and marital relationship advising. The work concluded that the cultural aspects of this sermon are renewable and should be addresses by researchers for the good of humanity. It is also clear that the sermon contained many Islamic prejudice, positive massages, that should be understood and achieved by Islamic nation.
