The Effect of an In-service Training Program on Developing High-Order Thinking Skills of Elementary School Teachers in the Kingdom of Bahrain

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of an in-service training program in developing high-order thinking skills (analysis, syntheses, evaluation) of elementary school teachers in the kingdom of Bahrain. A training program was designed and applied to develop high-order thinking skills of elementary school teachers in a public school in the kingdom of Bahrain. The program was applied during the second semester of the academic year 2010-2011 on a study sample consisted of (35) female teachers.
The program was based on the Procedural Learning Theory. It consisted of theoretical and practical training on implementing the use of high-order thinking Skills within the curriculum using Beyer’s Strategy. Quazi experimental method was implemented and the “SEA Test” was used to measure high order thinking skills. The results revealed that there was a statistically significant positive effect of the training program on developing high-order thinking skills of the study sample. The study recommended executing a complete plan for implementing thinking skills in school curriculum in addition to studying the effect of teaching thinking skills within the curriculum to the students.
