Century of the Kingdoms Life and the Prospects of Future Development

Abstract

The study aims first, to describe the stages through which Saudi agriculture progressed in the first century of the Kingdom s life; secondly, to show the extent of the development in the agricultural production sector, and thirdly, to know the role of the government support in effecting such development in the realms of production and horizontal expansion and the effect of that on the future of agriculture. The research indicates three stage of agricultural development: the stage of traditional agriculture, the stage of normal modem agriculture, and the stage of rapid random modern agriculture. The characterizing feature of each stage have been defined together with the concern of King Abdulaziz with modern agriculture which culminated in his establishing the first General Directorate of Agriculture in 1347 H. Then the research deals with the possibilities of future agricultural development in Saudi Arabia and the emergence of some phenomena indicated by the research which have started to bear on the progress of the agricultural sector. The research has put forward recommendations that demand the control and guidance of agricultural development through the efficient use of available resources and ground water in particular to ensure continuity and avoidance of wastage, and to preserve agricultural resources for future generations under the leadership of the Saudi government whose efforts are genuinely devoted.
