Illiteracy: The Problem and the Solution in Light of Saudi Experience

(Suleiman Bin Saleh Qar'awi)

Abstract

Illiteracy is a serious problem that may confront a nation, as a good citizen should be aware of all that might lighten his public and private life affairs and help him face life problems and other phenomena in a way that is free from ignorance, superstitions, and decadence. Thus, it goes without saying that an illiterate is incapable of reaching a level that would qualify him to interact positively within this society and his nation at large. And since every nation is made up of its own people, and since its advancement is decided by the amount of active involvement of its people in it, eradication of illiteracy in a nation becomes a title of its advancement and development. Although writing about the problem of illiteracy does not provide immediate corrections in the manners of behavior in a society, it does, however, contribute in redirecting awareness of the problem and help find a solution for it, which is the main objective of this paper. The efforts of the late King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al-Saud had been launched in an attempt to restore the construction of a powerful state that would overcome all possible obstacles that might hinder its advancement and development and its dedication to the law of Tawheed and from determination to keep it clear of all sources of ignorance of superstitions. Hence it was with this object in mind that I have decided to write this paper.
