The Characteristics and Motives of Entrepreneurs in the Health and Education Private Sector: An Empirical Investigation of Small and Medium Firms in the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia

Abstract

This paper is set to explore the characteristics and motives of entrepreneurs in the health and education private firms in the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia. The study is based on a sample of 62 organizations, 38 in the health sector and 24 in the education sector. The empirical results reveal that entrepreneurs are mature, well qualified and have long working experience either in the public or the private sector. As with respect to the motives of the entrepreneurs the study shows that utilizing of the skills and abilities which the entrepreneurs possess as well as achieving economic return on their investments are the main motives. However, the study shows some significant statistical differences between entrepreneurs in the two sectors as with respect to age at the time of starting business, academic qualifications and previous working experience.
