Estimating Current and Future Needs of Veterinary Professions in Saudi Arabia

Abstract

This study aims to recognize the size of current veterinary manpower in KSA and to compare the current status with actual needs of saudi veterinary manpower in KSA, and hence to estimate the veterinary manpower for the next twenty years in KSA. The study has considered some important factors including: number of veterinary graduates, animals population, volume of livestock production, value of traded live animals and animal products, and number of inhabitants in KSA from 1995 to 2007. To satisfy its objectives, the study has selected some international statistical indicators for estimating the average numbers of veterinary personnel based on prescribed factors. The study has reached to some important results as that the shortage in Saudi veterinary personnel reached to 2098 veterinarians with ratio of 71.92% to the required number of veterinary personnel in 2007. The study has also estimated the required number of Saudi veterinarians in 2027 as 4812 veterinarians with respect to 1572 graduates from veterinary colleges by 2027, and hence the shortage in veterinary personnel will reach to 3240 veterinarians with ratio of 67.33% to the required number of veterinary personnel by that time. Furthermore, the study has reached to estimate the number of veterinary jobs in public and private sectors for the next twenty years from 2007 to 2027. The study has put some important recommendations that could be useful for related firms from public and private sectors and higher education institutions in KSA.
