Makkah Al-Mukarramah in the Old Period: A Reading in History and Poetry

Abstract

This paper focuses on Makkah in the pre-Islamic period. It first introduces the semantic and referential meaning of the Arabic word Makkah, showing the sanctity of the place, life and the living in this city and its vicinity. The paper traces the names of this spiritual city as they are used in The Quran and as they occur in historical references and chronicles. This covers the beginnings of the city, the construction of the Shrine of Ibrahim, the history of some Arab Makkah tribes and the building of the Kaba, and the emergence of Zamzam water source. The paper also focuses on the entitlement of the tribe of Quraish to be the custodian of the Holy Shrine of Kaba and the impact of being the Prophet Mohamed is from an influential family amongst the tribe of Quraish.
